BNOS ALIYA HARD @ WORK: WINTER EDITION

Dear Parents,

​November and December were happy and productive months at Bnos Aliya marked by the introduction of our Science, Geography and U.S. History curriculum. As were the formal studies of dikduk (Hebrew grammar) and the informal study, through songs, skits and other activities, of yedios klaliyos (basic Jewish knowledge). 

This expansion of the curriculum was possible because the girls greatly increased their capacity for focused, purposeful and independent work during September and October. This is, of course, a core goal of the Montessori elementary classroom. Nevertheless, it is a thrill and a delight to witness such growth.

We also enjoyed extracurricular activities during these months: two trips to the American Museum of Natural History and a calligraphy workshop led by Mrs. Nancy Corbin, grandmother of Maya and Jordana  Corbin. The museum trips directly and delightfully supported the learning we are doing in Science. Mrs. Corbin's fun and inspiring workshop supported our work in penmanship with a vision of handwriting elevated to art.

Lashon HaTorah

Maya matches illustrations of key shorashim (Hebrew root words) to their English and Hebrew written forms and uses our Hebrew cursive moveable alphabet to spell them out. She records her work with pencil and paper.
Chaya works on a Hebrew grammar activity. She determines whether the word is masculine or feminine, how to form its plural correctly and then records the singular and plural forms of the words with the Hebrew movable alphabet. 
English

Emuna works on phonics to independently discover patterns which create the long vowel sound.
Math

Jordana discovers all of the division combinations with a remainder of zero. This will ultimately lead her to create her own division equations.

 Nina uses the multiplication bead bars to create a concrete representation of the "five" times table. 
Science

Sarah Shayna has matched three-dimensional representations of parts of the body to their English and Hebrew names. She records the connections she has made.
Geography

Temima labels all of the continents on the map.

Chayala engages in a follow-up lesson which, after labeling all the continents and oceans, she explores the relationships of the continents to each other.

I am a believer that hard work pays, and that is why I love this blog of yours. I absolutely love the fact that you remind us of how much hard work can help us improve ourselves. If I just stay the same way that I am forever, then I will never be able to get anything done. I really need to up my game if I want to get to where I want to be. Thank you for the reminder
