BNOS ALIYA HARD @ WORK: WINTER EDITION

2/6/2018

Dear Parents,

November and December were happy and productive months at Bnos Aliya marked by the introduction of our Science, Geography and U.S. History curriculum. As were the formal studies of dikduk (Hebrew grammar) and the informal study, through songs, skits and other activities, of yedios klaliyos (basic Jewish knowledge).

This expansion of the curriculum was possible because the girls greatly increased their capacity for focused, purposeful and independent work during September and October. This is, of course, a core goal of the Montessori elementary classroom. Nevertheless, it is a thrill and a delight to witness such growth.

We also enjoyed extracurricular activities during these months: two trips to the American Museum of Natural History and a calligraphy workshop led by Mrs. Nancy Corbin, grandmother of Maya and Jordana  Corbin. The museum trips directly and delightfully supported the learning we are doing in Science. Mrs. Corbin's fun and inspiring workshop supported our work in penmanship with a vision of handwriting elevated to art.

We hope you enjoy the pictures below of your daughters hard at the creative, joyful work of becoming thoughtful and knowledgeable Bnos
Torah!

Sincerely,
Amy Friedman and Miriam Kaufman

Maya matches illustrations of key shorashim (Hebrew root words) to their English and Hebrew written forms and uses our Hebrew cursive moveable alphabet to spell them out. She records her work with pencil and paper.
Chaya works on a Hebrew grammar activity. She determines whether the word is masculine or feminine, how to form its plural correctly and then records the singular and plural forms of the words with the Hebrew movable alphabet.

Emuna works on phonics to independently discover patterns which create the long vowel sound.

THANKSGIVING LESSONS @ BNOS ALIYA

Traveling Back to the 1600's
Picture
Our class took an imaginary trip--guided by Mr. David and Mrs. Carol Feinberg--back to the year 1620. The engaging grandparents of Emuna and Temima brought the Thanksgiving story to life by dressing up as King James, William Bradford, a Pilgrim woman and Squanto the Indian, reciting original poetry, and singing traditional holiday songs. The interactive presentation gave the children food for thought to ask the teachers more about the upcoming holiday.

King James (played by Mr. Feinberg) refuses to allow an innocent  Pilgrim (played by Mrs. Feinberg) practice her religion freely.
Mrs. Feinberg describes the long and tough voyage on the Mayflower in search of Freedom.

Bnos Aliya thanks Mr. and Mrs. Feinberg for leading such an exciting presentation and for donating our educational Thanksgiving props, costumes, and books! We encourage other grandparents willing to lead a short class on their occupation or another subject to contact us.  We are eager to learn from you.
"Thank You," The Essence of this Great American Holiday
Mrs. Friedman followed up the Thanksgiving presentation with a discussion on how Thanksgiving relates to the Mitzva of Hakaras HaTov (gratitude). The girls shared their excellent ideas about how to express gratitude in their daily lives. We continued the theme with a language lesson on how to write a thank you note. The girls then each wrote and illustrated an original thank you note for Mr. and Mrs. Feinberg.

A Peek Into Bnos Aliya's Montessori Classroom

Dear Parents,

We began our Great Lessons curriculum, which is the framework for the study of Science, Geography and History in the Montessori Elementary classroom. To complement the Great Lessons, the girls created a one-hundred-foot, to-scale Timeline of Jewish History using  Rabbi Rietti's cards.

Our goal is to orient our young Jewish ladies and instill an inspired sense of responsibility with the knowledge of who they are, where they come from, and where they are going.

Further below find photos of your daughters individualized academic skill development including Mathematics, and English and Hebrew Reading, Writing, and Spelling.

The Cube Chain
Picture
This is the cube chain of five. At one level it is a simple lesson about counting by 5's to 125. On another level it introduces the relationship between the square and the cubes of whole numbers. And on a third level, it supports the learning we have done this week on telling time on an analog clock.
Rabbi Rietti's Overview of Jewish History
Picture
This week we arranged 44 key events of 6000 years of Jewish History along a 100 foot ribbon. The ribbon allows the girls to visualize the scale of time, and where we fit in the unfolding of Hashem's prophecies.  This grounding also provides the Jewish context for the secular Great History lessons that will follow in the weeks ahead.
Picture
Temima is pleased to discover her place (in the class photo) at the appropriate spot in the Jewish History Timeline.
Tefilla
Picture
Mrs. Friedman explains to the class that Tefilla is not about singing as loud and fast as we can, but rather connecting to Hashem with much focus, understanding and gratitude.

A dynamic success! In our first Zumba class with Morah Numi, the girls did not stop moving or smiling for thirty minutes!
